Maori Education The Path to Our Future

Figures recently released by the Ministry of Education show that there has been a steady growth in Maori tertiary enrolments. However, although there has been growth in enrolment figures, this growth has been attributed primarily to growth in attendance at Wananga and educational institutes that empower Maori to embrace not only the learning of their history and culture, but teach mainstream educational courses in a manner that appeals to the style and formality of the Maori culture itself.

However, the figures also indicate that Maori are less likely to enrol in tertiary education facilities during the core tertiary ages of 18 to 24. According to the University of Waikato, a number of factors have been identified as affecting the successful participation of Maori students in tertiary education. These include the transition and adaption to unfamiliar environments and learning procedures, inappropriate support systems, financial barriers and a lack of social and academic support. A number of studies have highlighted the high number of students who are first generation participants in tertiary education, for whom adjusting to the practices and rules of a new environment without the support of whanau (family) is difficult.

Nonetheless, the emerging signs and trends of increasing Maori participation in tertiary education institutes are encouraging. Further research into the role of Maori education has highlighted the need to tailor the learning style, experience and environment to suit the aspirations of the Maori culture and the value of the whanau.

According to a review of Maori education conducted by MAI in 2007, the further education of the individuals, both young and old, is essential for the continued development and future prosperity of Maori and the culture. With a better educated population base, the review proposes that Maori will be better able to determine their own futures and prosper, both economically and socially. Marginal educational records and enrolments affect the future prospects of the individual and the whanau. However, several initiatives are proving very successful in respect to enrolment and completion rate of Maori students. These include empowering Maori in the community to take on leading roles in education institutions, developing role models that young Maori aspire to replicate.

Leading tertiary providers in New Zealand have realised these facts and have created tertiary environments that not only cater for the general public, but provide specific learning styles, teachings and learning environments that are conducive to the continued promotion of Maori education. Those who are serious about Maori education have gone so far as to provide customary Maori buildings, such as the marae, which is not only the focus of the whanau, but learning and education. Plus some institutions provide a”Manaakitanga” programme designed to support students’ success in their studies.

Ideas for Keeping Children Busy After School

Do you struggle to keep your children busy after school? It can be very tiresome to deal with energetic children after a long day at work. Fortunately, you don’t necessarily have to use up a lot of your own energy to keep the kids entertained.

Clubs and Societies

One of the easiest but in many cases costliest ways of making sure your kids remain entertained after school is to enroll them in various clubs and societies that relate to their interests.

For example, sporty young kids would probably love the opportunity to use up their excess energy taking part in activities such as football, swimming, gymnastics, athletics or alike. Consult the school, community centre or your local council on opportunities in your area.

Do you think your child could do well in music? If it’s singing they might be good at, find out how to join the local choir. Perhaps there is one at the school, the community centre or the local church. For those looking to learn how to play an instrument, there are options as well. Most schools have an orchestra or band of sorts that it could be possible to join. Alternatively, hire a private tutor.

Other options for after-school fun and socialising include joining groups such as the Brownies or Scouts. These are great for teaching your children how to be independent, and gain some real life skills.

There could be some more niche interest groups on offer in your local area too that could see your little one learning anything from survival skills to floristry.

Kitchen Fun

If you, your older children or your childminder are keen cooks, transfer this interest and these skills to the younger generation. No one is ever too young to help out in the kitchen; it’s just a case of assigning age-appropriate tasks that don’t involve sharp knives or other potentially dangerous kitchenware.

You could be baking or making dinner for mum and dad. Activities that young kids can do are mixing ingredients, kneeding dough, and washing fruit and veg, for example.

Experiments

Scientific exploration and discovery should be encouraged, as it teaches kids a lot about how the world works. You’ll be happy to hear you don’t need many resources to carry out experiments at home. Many can be done with the help of just a few common household items. Find instructions online or in children’s activity books. Many charities and educational foundations produce materials that you could use, such as the popular SEEDKIT.

These types of activities are often meant to make it easier for children to understand scientific concepts such as electricity, buoyancy and viscosity.

Geometry Study Tips

Geometry is the study of figures. We can segregate geometry into three parts – plane geometry, solid geometry, and spherical geometry. Plane geometry deals with objects like the point, line, circle, triangle, and polygon. Solid geometry deals with objects like the line, sphere, and polyhedron. Spherical geometry deals with objects like the spherical triangle and spherical polygon.

Starting with a few accepted truths (axioms and postulates), it builds up true statements by using a systematic step-by-step proof.

When students start studying geometry, at first they find it difficult because this is the first time they are learning the subject and they need to prove their answers. But just like all other subjects, when they learn it with patience and perseverance, they are able to master the subject.

Study Tips for Geometry

It has some accepted truths (axioms and postulates), so make sure you know them. Learn them thoroughly. Based on these axioms you will be proving many other theories.

Know all the geometry terms. To study geometry you must be familiar with its terminology. If you don’t know a term, don’t ignore it, look for its meaning and understand it.

Understand all the figures, and don’t just look at them and try to understand them. Always learn them by drawing them.

Make flashcards to remember formulas. Because during exams you should be very familiar with them.

Pay attention in the classroom. Try to understand as much as you can. Raise questions if you don’t understand anything. Asking questions increases understanding of the subject.

Don’t just complete your homework by copying it from someone, do it on your own by understanding it. It may take time, but you will understand everything and this will help you in the exams.

Problem solving is the key to learning mathematics so solve as many problems as you can. If you are not able to solve a problem, take it as a challenge and try to solve it.

Study in groups, it increases confidence levels. It also makes learning interesting.

Follow all these steps to ace geometry. If you still find it difficult and classroom geometry tutoring is not helping you, then look for online resources to get help with geometry. There are many online geometry help websites which provide study material, solved problems, unsolved problems, and geometry tutors too. You can download unsolved problems and practice them. You can also contact an online tutor if you are not able to understand the concepts. An online tutor will not only teach you but also provide you with geometry homework help.

Modern Family Review Education & Growth

I always think one of the most appealing things of The United States is that US parents are far more open in education. Instead of just talking to their children unilaterally, they pay more attention to the conversation between they and their children.

It isn’t just for fun to watch US TV shows. Sometimes it is like a kind of experience. Placing myself into the episodes, and feeling some of their education and inspiration that I have never had. Maybe it could make up some of the deficiency in my childhood. But just maybe…

Like other situation comedies, Modern Family can not escape from common family routine such as trivial home matters, couples conflicts, children growing problems and discords between daughter and stepmother. And although there are fights and conflicts, but every one in the big family loves each other, that the final ending of every episode is always happy.

Even if the editors keep creating topics, making up scenarios, we can always see through these pieces of facts the American educational culture and daily life. And I am always touched by the episodes and can’t help thinking how it could be if my parents had treated me like these…

Little Manny ridiculed by his classmates at school. His old stepfather knew that himself was not good at persuasion, so he called his son Mitchell to see meteor showers with him and Manny and try to persuade Manny by the way. Although teased by Manny, Mitchell sat down and told Manny that he had also been ridiculed by others as a child. Sometimes it is very strange that we hated to be isolated at childhood, but almost over one night, suddenly every one wanted to be different. Mitchell did not pretend to be profound, but said the homely words. This really deserves further thought.

I remember in one episode of Friends, Phoebe said that he doesn’t believe Darwin’s evolution theory. As a paleontologist, Ross felt that he had to persuade Phoebe. But Phoebe said, however, I know the theory of evolution makes sense, but why do I have to believe? Even if there is so much evidence and so many people who believe in it, but is it certainly right? Then Ross scratched his head, didn’t speak any longer, and packed up and left. I think this conveys determination of anti-authority and not blindly following the majority. Althouth this power is quite small and no body support it, but I still stick to my opinion.

What You Need To Know About Attachment Parenting Tools

William Sears coined a certain phrase called attachment parenting. It is a parenting philosophy taking its root on the principles of attachment theory in developmental psychology. It is also called secure attachment where in a strong emotional bond with parents during childhood becomes the ground for secure, emotionally emphatic relationship when one reaches adulthood.

Taking its root from attachment theory, attachment parenting is developed. The theory gives us an idea that the child or infant has the tendency to bargain closeness to another person and feel the security and love when that person is there. While in attachment theory, the child is attached to their parents mainly because they are human beings and human begins are social beings. They are not attached mainly because they need another human being to fill in their need for affection and attachment which is a normal part of a childs’ development.

Seven B’s is Dr. Sears’ attachment tool tends to bring out the best n your babies by implementing a certain type of caring style. The seven B’s includes birth bonding, breastfeeding, baby-wearing, bedding close to baby, belief in the language value of your baby’s cry and beware of the baby trainers and balance.

Another reminder that Dr. Sears gives out to al parents is that Attachment Parenting is a starter style and that there could be other factors that could prevent parents from practicing the seven B’s. Be it medical, environmental, or family circumstances, it should be remembered that the seven B’s are not considered strict rules where baby’s cues and level of needs are to be taken, understood, recognized and responded upon.

There is also an emphasis on AP as a tool and not a step. A tool can be diversified and individually practiced base on what is useful and applicable where in a step is to be practiced strictly and the non-fulfillment of one process makes the whole scene a mess. The last reminder that Dr. Sears gave is to stick with what is working for them and adjust the tolls that are not. Parenting styles gives you an avenue to design and be unique helping both parents and baby creates a loving a loving and healthy attachments.

Types of children insurance plans

Today all those who wish to systematically save enough for the future of their child consider buying a children plan. These plans help you to save up for the future of your child in the most affordable manner. Looking at the overwhelming response child plan have received from consumers, the market offers you two kinds of plans to invest in endowment based child plans & child ULIPs. Let’s take a look at both of them. In both the cases, the plan works in the similar manner, you need to pay a predefined premium towards the plan for a certain period of time. On maturity the plan pays out a lump sum or portions of the sum assured at regular intervals, as per your requirement.

Endowment based children plan largely depend on how the insurer performs. So if the insurance company generates profits from the investment & gives you a share, then the value of your investment grows. The profits are h&ed to you as bonuses. So if you want a better return on the investment, then you have to depend on the bonuses h&ed out to you. The policy mostly invests in debt products.

Child ULIPs on the other h&, form a more lucrative option to invest in. This instrument largely invests in equities. The risk it carries is evened out if you continue the policy for a longer duration.

Under this children plan, investors have the option of choosing from different kinds of fund as per their risk taking capacity. A child ULIP plan that invests your money 100% into equity is an aggressive fund, whereas a plan that invests only in debt will be a conservative plan. You have the liberty to choose any of the plans offered to you & even switch between the funds later. This kind of a child plan is always beneficial as you can make the best of long term investment. Remember to choose a plan that suits your risk bearing capacity the most.

A common benefit that both these plans provide is that if the parent of the child dies, the child is immediately h&ed the life cover amount by the insurer. Also, all the future premiums of the policy are paid by the company. On maturity the nominee gets an equal amount of the life cover along with the additional bonus if you opt for an endowment plan & the final market linked fund value in case of ULIP children plan.

Do Rebound Relationships Last

Do you want the good news or bad new 1st? OK, bad news 1st. Here it is: relationship experts say the “Rebound Relationships” are rarely based on love. That’s either good or bad, depending if you’re in or out of said relationship.

For the sake this article, I’m going to assume you’re on the outside looking in. Now the good news, you may not believe this, but you can actually make rebound relationships work for you. Give thanks to our creator that the feeling of “wanting to be in love”, usually lasts as long as the new romance lasts.

This doesn’t automatically mean they want their old partner back.

Are you wondering? Is this new romance with someone else, to get over you? That’s the common opinion among experts and non-experts. Rebound relationship dating helps to not think about the break up. Theyre used to help people move on from a real love.

Your problem, is also part of your answer to getting your ex back.

Remember this and try to understand, it does not matter why youre on the outs. It doesnt matter whose fault it was. It doesnt even matter who actually called the relationship off. Virtually all relationships founded on real love can be saved.

You will be surprised to discover that your lost love is likely still focusing on what was wrong with your relationship. What if you were a good guy, shell probably be hanging out with a bad boy.

If you are into foreign films, the new guy might just spend his last rent money to complete his “bobble head” collection of his favorite pro baseball team. Or, vice versa.

Are you starting to get the gist of what I’m talking about? If she is spending
time with someone with a different style than yours, this can actually be good for you, for two reasons:

1.Her attention is still focused on you, even when shes with the new guy. (but, she wont tell you that)

2.It gives you a chance to see what shes looking for.

The Rebound Relationship is usually just a Band-Aid.

Take advantage of this time to examine yourself! What if she felt she was missing something while with you, hopefully she doesn’t more marriage material in the new guy, then in you. Rebounds are complicated, with a lot of emotions flying around inside the heart. As she spends time with the new guy, shell start to see the flaws in him. After a month or so, the rebound will run its course. Coupled with the new you 2.0, you will start to look pretty good again.

Child Sponsorship Moves Beyond The Basics

One of the most popular forms of charitable giving in use today is child sponsorship as witnessed by the fact that just one of the leading child sponsorship charities currently has over 1 million individual child sponsors worldwide. Despite this huge level of support, it is not generally understood exactly what child sponsorship actually involves.

Most people tend to assume that ones chosen charity arranges for sponsors to be matched up with an underprivileged child in one of the poorer underdeveloped countries. The idea is that you essentially take a child under your wing and act almost like a fairy godmother or father until he or she attains adulthood and can stand on his or her own two feet.

To a large extent, this is a pretty accurate impression. New sponsors are matched with individual children and can typically choose which country, which sex and which age group they would prefer. They then exchange photos and letters on a regular basis. This obviously helps the sponsors to see at first-hand how their donations are benefiting the children.

The sponsorship itself costs approximately 15 per month and many donors choose to sponsor more than one child at once. One common misapprehension about these regular donations is that they go direct to the childs parents or guardian in order to pay for essentials such as food or education. In reality, some of the longest established child sponsorship charities have found that this is largely ineffective and can cause resentment amongst other children in the community who might not be so fortunate.

Instead, some of the largest charities prefer to pool total donations and implement larger schemes to assist the whole community. Nor are all the funds diverted towards obvious short term relief like providing food, water and basic healthcare. There is a strong emphasis on self-help and personal development so that future generations will be self sustaining and not so reliant on outside assistance.

To this end, sponsors will often find their donations finding their way into things like training courses to teach teenagers how to farm, small grants for business start-ups and introducing the concept of village based savings and loan organisations.

There is no doubt that the top sponsorship charities have been active for so long in many countries that they are now taking a leading role in aiding the overall welfare of children and ensuring that they are not exposed to discrimination, abuse and exploitation.
